Recommendations for BMP Designers

  • Use a treatment train approach for BMPs that considers:
    • The pollutants of concern (use International BMP and NPRD databases below)
    • The BMPs that can effectively address these pollutants
    • The volume reduction potential of the BMPs
  • Using a treatment train will help account for the inherent variability and uncertainties associated with BMP performance
  • Use performance data thelp improve designs

BMP Databases & Information

Protecting Water Quality: A Construction Site Field Guide

Urban Conservation Practices for Protecting and Enhancing Natural Resources - This brochure provides a snapshot of some options for construction and post-construction BMPs. It is not inclusive; however, the most common, effective, and most promising practices are highlighted.

International Stormwater Best Management Practices (BMP) Database - This database helps water quality professionals learn about successful stormwater best management practices (BMPs) and apply proven methods to local water quality projects.

EPA Urban BMP Performance Tool - Provides information on 220 studies on the effectiveness of over 275 stormwater BMPs effectiveness have been conducted. Search by pollutant, BMP type, or volume reduction.

National Pollutant Removal Database

BMPs in a Flash - Find maintenance costs of BMPs, descriptions, and information on site design, creating a Maintenance Plan, and more.

SWPPP Templates

The following resources can assist you in complying with the MDNR NPDES General Permit for Construction Activity as well as local requirements. While these templates can assist the public in preparing plans and conducting inspections, each construction site is different; the final plans must be appropriate for the site's conditions and BMPs used.

  • Model SWPPP - Includes a guide for construction sites, template and model Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), sample inspection form, and other valuable resources. The first example SWPPP is for a medium-sized residential subdivision and the second is for a small commercial site.
  • Inspection Form - Document self-inspections, if they are required for your project. Tailor the Excel file to your site conditions and BMPs to make it easier to document inspections. Stormwater Inspection Form (xls) (pdf)
  • Training Log - Document trainings with construction personnel and subcontractors.
